Herman Miller asked acclaimed furniture designer Bill Stumpf to develop an ergonomic chair for offices in 1990. This led him on a fact-finding mission to study and observe how the average office worker went about their day. He saw people likely to suffer from back pain and circulatory diseases in the future due to their limited movement. He also noticed their chairs to either be static or poorly designed.
With the help of materials expert Don Chadwick, Bill Stumpf created an adjustable chair with mechanisms that allowed for tilting and backrest movement. They also used elastic polymer mesh instead of leather upholstery. Lastly, the back used stretchy webbing to help let the body breathe. The overall design may not be a looker compared to executive chairs, but what they made was undeniably humanitarian. In 1994, they unleashed the Aeron to the world.
